MATRIX II
Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How does the Matrix II work?

A: The exact mechanism is unknown but all evidence indicates that it works at the cellular level.

Top of Page

Q: Is the signal similar to TENS?

A: The fields generated by the Matrix II are very different to TENS, being 100 times less in magnitude. The threshold of the electromagnetic field of the Matrix II is designed to stimulate at a cellular level.

Q: What is TENS?

A: TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electric Nerve Stimulation.

Top of Page

Q: Is there any sensation associated with treatment?

A: Most patients experience no sensation at all. Some experience a mild tingling. The Matrix II uses such a low amount of current your muscles will not twitch or jump like with a TENS device.

Q: When can the patient expect relief of pain and increase in mobility?

A: Initially, the pain may actually increase but over a three-to-four week period most conditions will improve dramatically.

Top of Page

Q: How long should the treatment time be?

A: We recommend one hour per day but even if the unit is left on for twenty-four hours no harm will come to the patient.

Top of Page

Q: Does the treatment have a lasting effect?

A: The therapeutic effect appears to be long lasting.

Top of Page

Q: What sort of conditions should I be using this treatment on?

A: Best results are obtained if the condition is localized, as in tennis elbow.

Top of Page

Q: What side effects can there be?

A: None, if used as instructed or as directed by your medical doctor, chiropractor or physiotherapist.

Top of Page

Q: How do I position the electrodes?

A: The electrodes should be placed so that the painful area is in between them. Never place the electrodes on the head anywhere above the jaw.

Top of Page

Q: Can I use the Matrix II when in a cast?

A: Definitely, using the Matrix II while in a cast will help the fracture heal quicker as well as help relieve pain and inflamation. See Electrode Placement with a Cast for how to install the electrodes properly.

Top of Page

Q: How long do the electrodes last?

A: The electrodes can be reapplied daily for about three weeks, after which they lose their adhesive quality.

Top of Page

Q: Can the electrodes be cut to fit an area?

A: Under no circumstances should the electrodes be altered in any way.

Top of Page

Q: Can this method be applied to a neck?

A: There is no contraindication to treating necks.

Top of Page

Q: Can the electrodes be placed anywhere on the head?

A: The electrodes should never be placed above the jaws. The long term effects of using the Matrix II on the head has not been studied.

Top of Page

Q: Are there areas where the electrodes should not be placed?

A: The electrodes should never be placed above the jaws, on the throat, over the heart, over the pelvis or uterus on a pregnant woman, on malignancies or on infected skin.

Top of Page

Q: What about a pregnant patient?

A: Extensive research has not been conducted pertaining to the effects of pulse fields during pregnancy. Therefore Biotronics Research does not recommend using the Matrix II during pregnancy.

Top of Page

Q: What about pacemakers?

A: As long as the electrodes are not close to the heart or the pacemaker, the Matrix II can be used. Consult your doctor.

Top of Page

Q: Can I use a 9 volt rechargeable battery?

A: No! Only standard 9 volt alkaline batteries should be used. The rechargeable batteries do not deliver the consistent voltage required.

Top of Page

Q: When can I say that the treatment has failed?

A: If there has been no response after four weeks the treatment has failed.

Top of Page

Q: Where can I order more electrode kits from?

A: More kits can be ordered directly from Biotronics Research.
